More info about the village of Scala:
It is a very deeply spiritual village, as witnessed by the several churches, that at one time were more than one hundred, such as the Dome, located in the central square, the church and bell tower of S. Giovanni Battista a Campidoglio, and the ruined Basilica of Sant’Eustachio.
It is also homeland to Gerardo de Saxo, founder, in the XI century, of the “Ospedalieri” (Knights Hospitallers), today known as the Supreme Military Order of the Knights of Malta.
In the woods of Scala there is a vast quantity of chestnuts and “marroni”, whose flour, up until a few years ago, represented an important mean of sustenance. Nowadays, the jams, jam tarts and other delicious specialties produced in this area, are excellent.
